Water and FoodWe have to to eat and most of us love doing it, but we don’t always think about what it takes to bring our food from field to plate. This educational kit examines the enormous amount of water needed for agriculture and related industries to grow, process, transport and sell the food we eat everyday.
Learn about water used to irrigate crops, the issues that farmers face in the dry areas where much of American crops are grown, and the large water footprint of meat production. These topics and more are covered in this informative paper, revealing the water hidden in our food. Finally, test your your knowledge with the two quizzes.

Additional Water Conservation Learning Projects
There are many ways to bring water conservation into your classroom, extracurricular and after-school activities. Here are some ideas:
Poster Contest
This is a great project for art and foreign language classes. Have students make posters showing water conservation ideas in the language that they are studying. Posters can be graded as an in-class assignment or can earn students extra-credit.
Research Project
Have your students and others develop their research skills by looking into water issues in your local area. Have them learn and write about where public water supplies come from, how much water their local community uses and existing or future problems that threaten the security of local water supply.
Taking Action on Campus or in the Community
Get people to become more involved in making places like their school, community centers and churches more water-conscious. Work to improve water fountains in buildings, get bottled water out of vending machines and raise awareness about saving water. Get students and community members to determine how much water is used to operate the facilities, keep playing fields green, fill local swimming pools and then figure out ways to use less.
Handouts and Tabling Materials
The following are printable handouts for tabling events. Please remember to save paper and print as little as possible.
